A Higher Self?
Many people believe there is a “Higher Self” that has clarity, wisdom and compassion which surpasses the common daily or relative sense of self. It is important to recognize that the term “Higher Self” has been used by many spiritual teachers as well as spiritual seekers to describe aspects of self that seem to fit on a continuum from “high” to “low.” Diving deep to discover what a “higher self” might be, One Life Awareness asks you to consider whether this hierarchical organization of aspects of self can express the true nature of Self.
We wish to point to the deeper knowing that a self cannot be divided, nor can reality be deconstructed into pieces. Reality is “what it is” and is complete as it is. Reality has no need for an improved version of self, especially if this suggests a transcendent character overseeing a lower ego-driven being. One Life Awareness does not divide itself into lower and higher, ego and witness, conditioned and unconditioned.
A “lower self” implies something deficient. A “higher self” implies something upgraded. The very sense that the self can be both a Low Self and a High Self depends upon a conceptual view that preserves dualism and maintains a vantage point “above” experience. A self that can be located, improved, elevated, or identified with—no matter how refined—emerges out of an attachment to effort, which is so often associated with the progressive path. This obscures the effortless precision of One Life unfolding. If you accept reality as One Life unfolding, you find there is no need for any variety of self—neither the higher nor the lower. “Me at my best” is all you can ever be.
There is no point in refining the self into a higher version. With improvement as a goal, spiritual ambition, pride in realization, or a subtle posturing of being “more awake” than others can arise as sophisticated ego strategies. One Life is Awareness is as it is. Compassion arises as fixation relaxes. Move beyond defending, improving, and trying in order to experience spontaneous presence. Instead, reveal, uncover, allow what is right here right now.
It is easy to stay attached to the idea that you must constantly improve, carefully creating “you but better.” Many fear that if left to live without charting constant improvement, they will simply devolve into an unconscious being. The deeper truth is that any mistaken reference points fall away as you stop looking for what needs upgrading and start recognizing that you are seeking to become what you already are. There is no self that is fixed and no point of reference that is static and unchanging. Take all the scaffolding down, and the self that remains is simply the whole Self. Higher/lower is ultimately meaningless when referring to a Self. Perhaps it is time to find terminology that can be more descriptive and truthful. Consider letting go of the idea of a Higher Self and find liberation in what is right here right now and just be all that you always are.

Language needs to evolve as concepts and understanding evolve. Of course using the term "Higher Self" does a good job of describing experience, it was just an insight that came to me, that Self in One Life Awareness is whole and complete as it is.
Yes. This is important to distinguish. I agree.
